American science fiction writer Dan Simmons, known for the cult science fiction saga Songs of Hyperion, has died at the age of 78. This was reported by Newsweek on February 27.

"Simmons died on February 21 in Longmont, Colorado, next to his wife Karen and daughter Jane," the publication says.

Dan Simmons was born on April 4, 1948 in Illinois. Before devoting himself to literary activity, he worked as a primary school teacher for 18 years.

Simmons began his writing career in 1985 with the novel The Song of Kali, which earned him his first prestigious award, the World Fantasy Award. His real world fame came from his debut in the science fiction genre with the novel Hyperion (1989), which won the Hugo Award for Best Novel. The book became the first part of the tetralogy "Songs of Hyperion", often considered one of the greatest works of modern fiction.

Simmons' works have been translated into more than 20 languages and published in 28 countries. In total, he wrote 31 books during his career, including novels and short story collections, and was awarded several times, such as Bram Stoker, Locus, Shirley Jackson and others.
