AP reported on the destruction by the US military of a border guard drone in Texas
The US military shot down an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) of the Customs and Border Protection Service using a laser in Texas. This was reported on February 26 by the Associated Press (AP), citing a statement from members of Congress.
After the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decided to close additional airspace near El Paso. The reasons for the use of the laser remain unclear, but this is the second time in two weeks that the laser has been used in this region, the publication says.
It is clarified that in the previous case near Fort Bliss, the laser did not hit the target, which also led to a temporary blockage of air traffic at El Paso Airport and its surroundings. However, this time the closure of the airspace was less extensive, and commercial flights were not affected.
Members of the House of Representatives, including Rick Larsen, expressed bewilderment and shock at the incident. They criticized the Trump administration for failing to implement a bipartisan bill that would have improved training for drone operators and increased coordination between the Pentagon, the FAA and the Department of Homeland Security.
