Finland reported on the rescue of Finnish ships in the Gulf by Russian icebreakers
Several Finnish cargo ships were stuck in the ice of the Gulf of Finland and the territorial waters of Finland, and Russian icebreakers came to their aid. This was announced on February 26 by the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA).
"Difficult ice conditions and strong winds have caused several cargo ships to get stuck in the ice in the international maritime zone of the Gulf of Finland and the territorial waters of Finland. In accordance with the usual winter shipping practices, the vessels are also being assisted through international cooperation with Russian icebreakers," the publication says.
In addition, the press service added that at the request of Finland, Russian icebreakers may be involved to help ships stuck in the territorial waters of the state.
On February 15, political scientist Yuri Svetov, in an interview with Izvestia, commented on the situation with a German icebreaker stuck in the Arctic ice, saying that the Russian icebreaking fleet has sufficient capacity and is able to pass through the thickest ice. According to the political scientist, both the European states and the United States do not have such powerful nuclear icebreakers.
