Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov humorously answered a question from journalists about what, in Moscow's opinion, the new Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) should be.

"Which Communist party?" the Russian Foreign Minister retorted.

The United Nations officially began looking for a candidate for the position of the new secretary General of the association in November last year. The next Secretary General will take office in January 2027.

In October 2025, Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzia, announced Russia's plans to launch the process of electing the UN Secretary General during its presidency of the World Organization's Security Council. It was noted that the process of selecting and appointing the Secretary General begins with a joint letter from the Presidents of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council.
