Peskov: the Cuban border guards acted as they should in the situation with the boat
The Cuban border guards acted according to instructions during the attack by the U.S.-flagged boat and did everything they had to. This was announced on February 26 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
"As it was reported from Havana, [Cuban citizens] were captured, who tried to enter the island with weapons in their hands. <...> The Cuban border guards did what they had to do in this situation," Peskov said.
He also noted that the attackers later confessed that they had tried to enter the territory of Cuba in order to carry out terrorist acts. According to him, all sides should show restraint and should not allow any provocations.
The press service of the Presidency and the Government of Cuba, citing a statement from the republic's Interior Ministry on February 25, reported that those detained from a boat that entered Cuban waters who opened fire confessed to terrorist intentions. It was noted that the detained vessel, registered in Florida, was carrying 10 armed men.
Later, The New York Times reported that the boat that opened fire did not belong to the U.S. Navy or Coast Guard. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that the employees of the American administration were not involved in the incident.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, in turn, called the incident an aggressive provocation by the United States aimed at escalating the situation and detonating the conflict.
