- The Estonian Ministry of Defense stated that there was no discussion of the deployment of nuclear weapons.
The Estonian Ministry of Defense did not discuss the issue of deploying nuclear weapons of another NATO state on the territory of the country. This was announced on February 26 by the Minister of Defense of the Republic Hanno Pevkur.
"If you are asking whether the government has discussed the issue of deploying nuclear weapons in Estonia, which country and under what conditions, the answer is no," the minister said, according to the national television and radio portal ERR.
Pevkur noted that the issues of nuclear deterrence are being resolved at the level of the NATO nuclear planning group, in which all member countries of the alliance participate. He added that Tallinn relies on cooperation with its allies in matters of its own security.
On February 22, the Kremlin reacted to a statement by Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsakhna about its readiness to accept NATO nuclear weapons. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that if nuclear weapons aimed at Russia appear in Estonia, the Russian Federation will aim its nuclear weapons at the Baltic state. Peskov stressed that Moscow will always act based on the objectives of protecting national security, including in the field of nuclear deterrence.
