- Logvinov: hearings of candidates for the post of UN Secretary General will begin on April 20
The hearings of candidates for the post of the new Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) will start on April 20. This was announced on Thursday, February 26, by Kirill Logvinov, Director of the Department of International Organizations at the Russian Foreign Ministry.
Candidates, as he explained, began to be nominated back in November last year. To date, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, who was nominated by Buenos Aires, and the former President of Chile, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, who was nominated by Santiago, Brasilia and Mexico City, have participated in the competition.
"The next stage will be the holding of so—called interactive dialogues and hearings with applicants in the UN General Assembly, which will begin this week on April 20," Loginov told TASS.
According to him, as part of the speeches, those wishing to become UN Secretary General will be able to present their election program, share assessments of the current activities of the UN and views on building its work in the future. The representatives of the Member States listening to them are authorized to ask questions of interest.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 11 that Russia was working to prevent the UN from becoming a "cudgel" in the hands of one group of countries. She recalled that this body should be equal and act to achieve a common result.
