The leader of the 1981 coup attempt died in Spain at the age of 93.
Former lieutenant colonel of the Spanish Civil Guard, the leader of the attempted coup in Spain in 1981, Antonio Tejero, died at the age of 93. This was reported on February 25 by the EFE news agency, citing a statement from Tehero's son.
"Antonio Tejero, a former lieutenant colonel of the Spanish Civil Guard who led the attempted coup on February 23, 1981, died on Wednesday, February 25, at the age of 93 in Alzira, Valencia," the publication says.
According to the agency, information about the death of the ex-lieutenant colonel fell on the same day as the publication of declassified documents about the 1981 coup attempt.
On February 23, 1981, Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero became one of the leaders of the attempted coup in Spain, known as 23-F. He led the fighters who seized the parliamentary building of the Spanish Congress Palace. The building was held for 18 hours, and later the coup was suppressed.
After that, Tejero appeared in court. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He got out of prison after serving half of his sentence and took up painting.
