Investigators have detained a resident of the Irkutsk region in the case of the death of a group of tourists from China on Lake Baikal. This was reported on February 25 by the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.

"During the investigation of the circumstances of the incident, a 36-year-old resident of the village of Khuzhir in the Olkhon district was identified, who actually acted as the organizer and coordinator of illegal tourist transportation, receiving the main income from this and distributing it among the performers," the IC said in a statement on the MACH messenger.

The agency's message notes that the detainee's involvement is confirmed by a set of evidence, including phone calls, correspondence and numerous receipts of large sums of money. This indicates his steady involvement in the illegal tourism business and the receipt of significant income incompatible with his status as an unemployed person.

The detainee was charged under Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more persons by negligence"). The investigation requests that the defendant be taken into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
