The keto diet can help restore the positive effects of physical activity in people with high blood sugar levels. This was reported on February 25 by Medical Xpress magazine.

Physical activity strengthens the heart, promotes weight loss, and increases the body's ability to use oxygen. However, in people with hyperglycemia, these benefits are less pronounced: muscles respond less well to stress and absorb oxygen less efficiently, which increases the risk of cardiovascular and kidney diseases.

In a study on mice, a high-fat ketogenic diet lowered blood sugar levels and increased the body's sensitivity to exercise. Sports medicine specialist Sarah Lessard noticed that after a week of following the diet, blood sugar levels returned to normal.

According to her, over time, the mice underwent a "remodeling" of muscle tissue: the proportion of slow muscle fibers responsible for endurance increased, and the ability to use oxygen became higher. Their bodies, as the specialist noted, used oxygen more efficiently, which is a sign of increased aerobic capacity.

A ketogenic diet involves high levels of fat and extremely low carbohydrates, which puts the body in a state of ketosis — using fat as the main source of energy. Despite the controversy surrounding this approach, it was previously used to control diabetes even before the discovery of insulin.

"In this and our other studies, we have found that diet and exercise do not work in isolation. There are many combined effects, so we can get the most out of exercise if we stick to a healthy diet at the same time," Lessard added.

In the future, the researcher plans to test the results in humans. However, she noted that the keto diet is difficult to follow, and milder regimes (such as the Mediterranean diet) can also help reduce sugar by keeping healthy carbohydrates from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains in the diet.

On February 19, Medical Xpress reported on the dangers of a diet without fiber for memory. It was clarified that highly processed foods are associated with inflammation and memory impairments in the aging brain. According to the researchers, the effect can be observed as early as three days after the start of such a diet.
