- The reasons for his "expulsion" from Latvia were not explained to the Russian Korean scholar Lankov.
On February 25, Andrei Lankov, a Russian orientalist and Korean scholar specializing in North Korea, who was detained in Latvia by the police, announced his lifelong exile from the country for unnamed reasons.
"About the expulsion from Latvia. <...> There were no explanations in the documents shown to me and my lawyers about why I was permanently exiled from Latvia (where I spent four hours after a 30-year break)," he wrote on his Telegram channel.
Speaking about the events that unfolded after the lecture was disrupted by the Latvian police and immigration service, the researcher stressed that the authorized persons behaved very politely. This observation, as Linkov clarified, allowed him to conclude that "these guys and girls didn't really want to follow orders."
He added that during the whole time he was offered help by both friends and complete strangers living in the Baltic States. The scientist thanked those who were not indifferent for their help and added that he would not take any steps after the incident, as he considered these actions pointless.
"In general, everything is quite clear. The bosses don't like the fact that I'm not making a politically useful caricature out of a real situation," concluded Lankov.
The day before, it was reported that the Latvian police detained Lankov right during his lecture in Riga. According to eyewitnesses, two police cars arrived at the building where the lecture was held. Lankov himself reported that the Latvian authorities had put him on a kind of "blacklist." However, nothing was known about this before, and tickets for the lecture were freely available.
