The termination of oil supplies from Russia via the Druzhba pipeline was the result of deliberate collusion between the Ukrainian authorities and the leadership of the European Union (EU). This was announced on February 23 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"Another shocking fact is that Ukraine is really cooperating with Brussels, really cooperating with the European Commission headed by [Ursula] von der Leyen on the issue of blocking oil supplies. Today it was finally clarified and confirmed," Szijjarto said.

The Minister stressed that the Hungarian government regards the suspension of the transit of resources as a direct threat to national security. He noted that such actions are aimed at undermining the energy sustainability of the state.

On the same day, the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry announced that the country had blocked the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and the allocation of a loan to Ukraine for €90 billion due to the shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline by Kiev. He also noted that Hungary regards Kiev's suspension of the transit of Russian oil through Druzhba as an encroachment on its sovereignty.

Szijjarto said on February 19 that the European Commission (EC) was acting in the interests of Ukraine, not the EU member states. The minister stressed that Kiev had begun "explicit political blackmail of Hungary" by blocking oil supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline.

Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, in turn, said that the ultimatum of Hungary and Slovakia to cancel diesel fuel supplies to Ukraine had put Kiev in a desperate situation regarding the restoration of transit through the Druzhba oil pipeline.
