The International Climbing Federation has allowed athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in competitions under the auspices of the organization in a neutral status. This was announced on February 23 in the press service of the federation.
"At its meeting in Turin, the Executive Board of World Climbing lifted the suspension from the Russian and Belarusian climbing federations...> World Climbing allows athletes and team representatives with Russian and Belarusian passports to participate in international competitions, subject to the criteria of neutral athletes," the statement on the organization's website says.
The federation clarified that the ban on holding international tournaments in Russia and Belarus remains in place until further notice.
Russian and Belarusian rock climbers have been banned from participating in international competitions since 2022.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 12 that Moscow was counting on the restoration of the full-fledged status of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the international Olympic movement and was seeking the return of the rights of Russian athletes. Zakharova added that the opening of the Olympics is always a celebration of sports, which should remain a symbol of unity, striving for excellence, fair struggle and respect for the values and foundations of the Olympic movement.
ROC head Mikhail Degtyarev said at a meeting of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sport on February 11 that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) might consider restoring ROC status in April or May.
