The PCT reported that up to 5,000 Russian citizens were in Mexico.
About 3.5–5 thousand Russian citizens, including tourists, are currently in Mexico. Artur Muradyan, a member of the Board of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (PCT), told Izvestia on February 23.
It is noted that the relatively small tourist flow is associated with the high cost of flights, the lack of direct flights and competition from other popular destinations. Muradyan clarified that due to the lack of direct flights, all the figures given are indicative.
According to his estimates, about 65-75% of Russians in Mexico are independent travelers. The rest used the services of tour operators. In addition, the country is home to a significant number of Russian citizens who moved there earlier as part of the relocation.
The average cost of an organized tour for seven days with accommodation in a two-star hotel without meals starts from 220 thousand rubles. Muradyan also explained that the final price is influenced by the cost of flights with transfers and accommodation.
Currently, there are no mass appeals to tour operators, cancellations of trips or requests for early return of tourists. The PCT recommended that Russians take precautions and monitor official reports from tour operators, airlines, and local authorities.
Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, the head of one of Mexico's largest drug cartels, the Jalisco New Generation, was announced on February 22. The operation was organized by units of the country's armed forces. In response to the actions of the security forces, cartel members began blocking highways in a number of regions, including the states of Jalisco, Michoacán, Colima, Tamaulipas, Guanajuato and Aguascalientes.
Later, riots broke out in Mexico. Criminal gangs began blocking roads and setting cars on fire, trying to interfere with the operation of law enforcement agencies. In the state of Jalisco, armed men broke into the airport of Puerto Vallarta. There is no information about the victims.
It was noted that at least 240 Russian tourists are in the Mexican city of Puerto Vallarta. An eyewitness described the situation as "scary and critical."
