- The Wall Street Journal cited the reason for Lagarde's departure after Lutnik's speech in Davos.
The president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Christine Lagarde, left the hall during a speech by US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick at the World Economic Forum in Davos because, in her opinion, the speech of an American official was inappropriate. The head of the bank announced this on February 21 in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
According to Lagarde, the speech of the American official contained excessively harsh criticism of Europe. In particular, as it seemed to her, Lutnik noted the uncompetitiveness of the European economy.
"I considered the speech of the last speaker, without any refutations, a man who simply attacked Europe, the right, the left and the centrists, excessive," said the head of the ECB.
On February 20, US President Donald Trump, in an interview with reporters, pointed to the crisis in Europe because the countries in the region had become weak and unrecognizable. The Head of State clarified that Europe is being "killed" by energy and migration.
