Two more cars went under the ice on Lake Baikal
In the Irkutsk region, two more cases of partial failure of cars under the ice were recorded in the area of the closed Olkhon ferry on Lake Baikal. This was reported on February 21 in the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Irkutsk region.
"Two cases of partial failure of vehicles have been registered in the area of the Olkhon ice crossing, which was not put into operation due to the unsatisfactory condition of the ice - the presence of dynamic cracks formed during the thaw," the message says in the MAX messenger.
According to the agency, despite the ban, drivers drove onto the ice outside the officially authorized areas, which led to accidents.
On Friday evening, rescuers of the Baikal Search and Rescue squad of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations found a partially submerged Toyota Land Cruiser in the Kurkuta Bay 5 km from the coast. There was a woman and a child in the cabin who could not get out on their own. Rescuers evacuated them on a hovercraft and winched the car out of the water. The victims were handed over to their relatives.
On the morning of February 21, another incident occurred — a JAC car with four vacationers partially fell into an ice crack, the rear wheels were in the water. People were unable to get out on their own and reported hypothermia. Rescuers took them on a departmental vessel to the village of Sakhyurt.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations reminded of the need to observe a ban on leaving and going out on the ice outside specially equipped crossings. In addition, the agency urged residents to take into account the warning signs installed on the coastline.
A source told Izvestia on February 20 that a car with tourists in the cabin had gone under the ice of Lake Baikal. Later, the bodies of the dead and the failed UAZ were found. At the same time, it became known about the identification of all those who were in the car at the time of its collapse. They turned out to be a 44-year-old local resident and a family from China, whose data was preserved in the hotel's database: a married couple, their 14-year-old child and another relative.
Subsequently, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) reported that this group of tourists did not arrange an excursion through tour operators. In addition, the route they were following was not, according to preliminary data, coordinated with representatives of travel agencies and rescuers.
Denis Kuznetsov, a tour guide, told Izvestia on February 20 that Chinese citizens were not traveling legally. According to him, the driver of the drowned car, Nikolai Dorzheev, was a local and lived in the area of Olkhon Island, near which the tragedy occurred.
As a result, Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation, demanded from Rinat Yamaliev, Acting head of the Investigative Department (SU) of the IC of Russia for the Irkutsk region, a report on the progress of the investigation into the death of tourists from China in the waters of Lake Baikal.
