The villages of Izh (Kirov region), Yam (Moscow Region) and Aya (Altai Territory) are included in the list of Russian settlements with the shortest names. This was reported to TASS on February 21 by the Rosreestr press service, citing data from the State Catalog of Geographical Names.

The top five also includes the work settlement of Uk, located in the Irkutsk region, and the village of Ig in the Arkhangelsk region. According to Pavel Sklyanchuk, an independent expert and political scientist, such laconic names in most cases are associated with the linguistic peculiarities of the indigenous peoples of Russia.

"Local residents of municipalities with a laconic name may have difficulties with typos when receiving public services, postal transfers, as well as when publicly labeling residents with word forms with suffixes," Sklyanchuk emphasized.
