For most Russians, February 23rd is not just a date on the calendar. On the eve of Defender of the Fatherland Day, STARWIND brand experts conducted a study and found out from Russians who is waiting for congratulations on this day, what they would like to receive as a gift and how to choose a surprise. Izvestia got acquainted with the survey data on February 22.

Slightly more than half of the women surveyed (52%) are ready to congratulate all men, regardless of whether they served in the army or not. However, a fifth (20%) believe that only those who actually served in the military deserve gifts. Another 2% of women admitted that they themselves are defenders of the Fatherland — they serve or work in the field of defense — and would also be happy to receive congratulations.

Among men, opinions were distributed differently: 14% served in the army and that is why they expect a gift, 8% did not do military service, but they are still waiting for congratulations. Another 4% have not served and believe that gifts to men without military experience are not necessary.

When choosing a gift, 55% of Russians primarily pay attention to practicality and quality, 28% believe that emotions and impressions should be given, and 10% are guided by the interests and hobbies of the recipient.

This generally coincides with the wishes of the defenders of the Fatherland. 36% of respondents would like to receive things, appliances or electronics, 27% choose an evening together, a trip or an activity with a loved one. A symbolic gift will suit 11%, a small but thoughtful gift — 9%, and 8% will be happy just to congratulate.

If we talk about specific gift options, money and gift certificates are the most popular — exactly half of the respondents chose them. Household and repair tools, including drills and screwdrivers, were in second place in popularity (46%), and care products and perfumes were among the most sought—after gifts, with another 36% noting them.

Power tools are a welcome gift, because first of all they bring practical benefits. So, 40% of respondents, when choosing such a gift, assume that it will be used for minor home repairs, furniture assembly or household tasks, and 18% of the study participants choose a tool for specific tasks and hobbies. Another 18% of respondents will donate power tools only at the recipient's request.

When buying equipment, 72% of the survey participants primarily evaluate its quality and durability, for 56%, power and technical characteristics are important, and 44% focus on ease of use — these parameters should also be taken into account when choosing a gift.

At the same time, 24% of respondents regularly repair or improve their homes on their own, while 22% face such tasks several times a month. Only 6% prefer to contact specialists at the same time.

"Power tools for personal use should be chosen with an understanding of what they will be used for: it is important that they are really useful in everyday life. At the same time, 44% of the survey participants noted that household tasks may arise urgently, and then at the moment there is a need for some kind of tool, so a gift bought "in reserve" may also be useful. According to statistics, the most popular and versatile DIY tool is a cordless screwdriver drill," said Alexander Galkin, Product Director of the STARWIND brand.

The survey results show that Russians primarily value gifts for their real benefits. At the same time, money and certificates remain a universal option, and power tools are popular among those who are actively engaged in repairs and household chores.

A study by HYUNDAI brand experts on February 19 showed that the ideas of men and women about what a gift should be for Defender of the Fatherland Day differ significantly. Thus, 40% of respondents are going to give a symbolic gift, while representatives of the stronger sex dream of receiving useful gifts as a gift — tools (50%), equipment (36%) and gift certificates (29%).
