The search for eight people whose car fell through the ice on Lake Baikal in the Irkutsk region has begun. This was announced on Friday, February 20, by the press service of the Regional Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.

"Search activities are underway. All the circumstances of the incident are being established, eyewitnesses of the tragedy are being questioned, as well as representatives of the prevention system ensuring safety at the water facility," the agency said in a statement on the Telegram channel.

It is noted that in addition, an investigative task force consisting of UK investigators, police officers and the Ministry of Emergency Situations is working at the scene. The text emphasizes that criminal cases were initiated in accordance with Part 3 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of two or more persons by negligence") and Part 3 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code ("Negligence").

The fact that a car carrying foreign tourists went under the ice on Lake Baikal became known on the same day. It was noted at the time that there were deaths as a result of the incident. The Ministry of Emergency Situations also reported that two pieces of equipment and five rescuers had moved to the scene. Later, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported that one person managed to escape from the sunken vehicle.
