The voice of avant-garde rock: Nikolai Komyagin has died
Nikolay Komyagin was born in 1987 in Novokuznetsk. In 2010, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he received an education as an art critic and historian. Before fully devoting himself to music, Komyagin worked as a school history teacher, taught at the Moscow Art Theater, and also worked as a methodologist at the Museum of Modern Art. Later, he became the head of the educational center at the Museum of Art of the XX–XXI centuries, where he lectured.
Creation of the band Shortparis and musical career
In 2012, Nikolai Komyagin, together with Alexander Ionin and Pavel Lesnikov, founded the Shortparis group. Later, Alexander Galnov and Danila Kholodkov joined the team. Since 2012, Komyagin has been the lead singer, frontman and one of the main ideologists of the band.
Shortparis quickly became a notable phenomenon on the Russian and international scene due to its bold combination of postpunk, avant-garde rock, pop elements, folk and electronica. The musicians deliberately disharmonized their own arrangements, creating a sense of tension among the listeners. Their performances were notable for their stage expression, visual audacity, and radical performance aesthetics. The band's concerts were often compared to theatrical productions.
Among the most famous Shortparis compositions are "Scary", "Moscow Speaks" and "Apple Orchard". The video for the song "Scary" became the most famous in the band's history and gained millions of views on YouTube.
Working in films and other projects
In 2018, Komyagin, as part of Shortparis, took part in the filming of Kirill Serebrennikov's film "Summer". The musicians performed a cover of David Bowie's song All the Young Dudes.
In 2019, Nikolai starred in the short film "Complicated", which was included in the program of the Cannes Film Festival.
In 2022, Danila Kozlovsky's TV series "Karamora" was released, where Komyagin played the role of Vladimir Mayakovsky.
Death

The incident was reported by the artist's manager Marina Kosukhina on Instagram (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia), as well as journalist Ksenia Sobchak in her telegram channel. The musician was 39 years old. The suspected cause of death was heart problems after boxing training.
Nikolai Komyagin left a noticeable mark on the Russian independent music scene, becoming one of the key figures of the St. Petersburg avant-garde rock of the 2010s and 2020s.
