Forgiveness Sunday ends the Carnival week and becomes a symbolic boundary between the merry festivities and the beginning of Lent. On this day, believers try to reconcile with their loved ones, let go of old grievances and prepare for a period of prayer and self-restraint. What prohibitions are associated with Forgiven Sunday and what is allowed to do on this day — in the Izvestia article.

The meaning and history of the Forgiven Sunday

Forgiveness Sunday is the last Sunday before Lent. In the church tradition, this day is called Cheese Week or the commemoration of Adam's exile. He completes the preparatory period for fasting and reminds believers of the need for inner purification.

The custom of mutual forgiveness has its roots in the early Christian era. According to legend, the monks of the Egyptian deserts went into seclusion in remote places before the start of the forty-day fast. Before parting, they asked each other for forgiveness, as they understood that not everyone would be able to return to the monastery. Over time, this tradition spread among the laity and became an integral part of church life.

In 2026, Forgiveness Sunday falls on February 22. The next day, February 23, begins Lent, which will last until Easter on April 12.

What restrictions apply on Holy Sunday

There are no strict canonical prohibitions on this day, but church tradition and popular beliefs have formed special rules of conduct. The main principle is to keep peace in the soul and not to disturb the inner state of rest before starting the fast.

The most serious offense on this day is considered to be the refusal to forgive a person who sincerely asked for forgiveness. In the Orthodox tradition, it is considered unacceptable to deliberately hold a grudge if you are approached with reconciliation. Even if it is difficult to completely let go of the pain, the believer is advised at least not to show malice and not to respond with rudeness. It has long been said among the people that to refuse forgiveness is to cause misfortune and mental heaviness for the whole year.

A formal approach to words of reconciliation is also discouraged. Asking for forgiveness "for show" or uttering a traditional phrase without an inner intention to change a person's attitude is considered meaningless. Forgiveness Sunday presupposes awareness, not mechanical observance of custom.

Why can't you quarrel and swear

On this day, it is especially important to avoid conflicts. It is believed that swearing, evil words and arguments before the very beginning of the fast reduce its spiritual value. According to church teaching, fasting does not begin with abstinence from food, but with an inner attitude. If a person continues to engage in conflict, anger, or envy, the meaning of abstinence is lost.

Foul language is also undesirable. In the folk tradition, there was a belief that swearing on Forgiveness Sunday "attracts trouble" and can cause setbacks in the coming year.

What not to eat on Forgiven Sunday, February 22, 2026

Forgiveness Sunday falls on Cheese Week, when meat is excluded from the diet of believers. Dairy products, eggs, fish, pancakes and other traditional treats are allowed on this day. However, the clergy remind us that overeating and excessive alcohol consumption on Forgiveness Sunday contradict the spirit of the holiday.

Is it possible to work on a Forgiven Sunday

The church charter does not prohibit household chores, but heavy physical labor on this day is considered undesirable. It is better to postpone general cleaning, repairs or major household chores to another time. However, cooking, taking care of family, and helping elderly relatives or those in need are not only acceptable, but also welcome.

There was a popular belief that it was better to dedicate this day to family, church visits and quiet communication than to difficult work or household chores. This time was perceived as a transition to a more focused and thoughtful period of the year.

What can you do on Forgiveness Sunday?

On Forgiveness Sunday, it is customary to visit loved ones, call relatives, and write to those with whom you have not communicated for a long time. Many people try to come to terms with those with whom they had a quarrel. Family gatherings and quiet, no-frills feasts are allowed. It is important to visit the temple, take part in worship, and confess.

The main meaning of the day is not in formal prohibitions, but in spiritual preparation for Lent. Forgiven Sunday reminds us that external limitations are valuable only when accompanied by an inner desire for peace, humility and kindness.
