The parade of new gadget presentations in 2026 began with the failure of Google. Shares of the parent company Alphabet Inc., which owns the tech giant, fell by almost 5% after the announcement of the new smartphone. The Pixel 10a's specifications were leaked online in advance, and the model itself turned out to be almost indistinguishable from the previous version. Additional pressure was exerted by a shortage of components and weak marketing, experts told Izvestia. However, some Pixel users in Russia are still expecting a new product, despite all the restrictions and outdated hardware. Why the new model is unlikely to be of interest to a wide audience is described in the Izvestia article.

Smartphone without updates

The announcement of a new smartphone from Google provoked a drop in the quotes of the parent company Alphabet Inc. — the shares of the technology giant sank by almost 5%. At the same time, the negative market reaction began even before the official presentation: detailed specifications of the Pixel 10a leaked online on February 13. When it became clear that the gadget was almost identical to the previous model, the stock began to decline gradually. This reflects investors' disappointment with the lack of noticeable product innovations, technology experts told Izvestia.

The launch did not become a driver of interest in the smartphone line and did not form a positive information background around the company, according to IT expert Sergey Pomortsev.

— In fact, the Pixel 10a has become one of the most conservative updates of the A-series in recent years. The smartphone received the same Tensor G4 processor and 8 GB of RAM as the previous generation, and the key features — including the display, cameras and battery — either match or differ slightly. In fact, we are talking about a repeat of last year's model with spot improvements like a brighter screen and faster charging. The new product will go on sale worldwide on March 5," the expert said.

According to him, the lack of noticeable changes has increased criticism from experts and users. The novelty is perceived more as a repackaging of the previous device without a significant increase in performance or functionality, which calls into question the feasibility of the update. Even software and AI functions did not become a convincing argument, since some of them may appear on earlier models, Sergey Pomortsev noted.

Additional pressure was created by the company's marketing solutions, including discounts of up to 40% for owners of last year's smartphone, which indirectly indicates the need to stimulate demand. Attempts to strengthen their positions against the background of competition with Samsung and Apple have not yet had the expected effect: against the background of strong brands and developed ecosystems, the tech giant's devices remain a niche product even in key markets," he concluded.

This situation is also important for the Russian market: Google gadgets are supplied to the country mainly through parallel imports, so any changes in global prices and availability of models directly affect the final cost of the devices. The story of the Pixel 10a shows that in a highly competitive environment, investors expect noticeable technological updates from manufacturers. Their absence can lead to financial consequences even before the official announcement, Sergey Pomortsev emphasized.

A niche device is not for everyone

Interestingly, in Russia, the device was actually "assembled" a day after the start of pre-orders: blogger Sergius demonstrated a modified version of the smartphone with support for PixelSnap magnetic charging, based on the Pixel 9a. Magnets were integrated into the body of the previous model without noticeable external changes. Thus, the Russian Federation has already introduced its own "analogue" 10a.

The novelty has become a clear indication of the acute shortage of components in the global electronics market, says Nikita Boguslavsky, editor-in—chief of the Technology section. According to him, production capacities are being redistributed in favor of large customers, and prices for memory, processors, power supplies and controllers are growing in all segments. As a result, the company was forced to release a smartphone that almost completely repeats last year's model: with the same camera, processor, amount and type of memory, modem and battery. At the same time, the price remained the same — $ 499, although the device is already noticeably inferior to competitors and is actually outdated for a year, while the market continues to actively develop, he noted.

Google was one of the first victims of the crisis due to the fact that their smartphones are very niche and occupy a small market share in the world. This wave will reach other manufacturers a little later, regardless of the price segment. So, for example, according to leaks, Samsung flagships in 2026 will rise significantly in price without a noticeable increase in performance. The announcement of the basic iPhone 18 was probably postponed to a later date — Apple chose to keep the iPhone 17 on the market for more than six months longer than usual in order to avoid the need to raise the lower price bar in its lineup, the expert said.

Google's attempt to stay ahead of its competitors did not have the expected effect. Presentations of Samsung's new products are scheduled for February 25, and Apple's tablets for March 4, and against this background, the early announcement was not an advantage. The market, which the company is currently spending heavily on in the AI segment, is particularly sensitive to any signals of weakness in the hardware base, said Andrey Danilov, an expert on the mobile device market.

"It should be understood that fluctuations among large IT companies can affect the prices and availability of smartphones in Russia, especially given the parallel imports," he explained.

On a global scale, Pixel remains a niche product, but in Russia it is generally exotic: these gadgets sell literally hundreds of pieces per month, and penetration is scanty, said Eldar Murtazin, editor-in-chief of Mobile Review.

— It doesn't play any role in the market — it's a toy for enthusiasts, who are getting fewer every year. Plus problems with radio frequencies, network support, and other local nuances. In Russia, they love the "forbidden fruit", but with such a high price (even gray imports are expensive), Pixel does not find its buyer, the expert believes.

If the new smartphones were noticeably cheaper (the official price is $ 499 — about 38 thousand rubles), perhaps someone would have tried, but in the current reality they will not be in mass demand, the expert said.
