The United States has not yet responded to Russia's proposal to allocate $1 billion from frozen Russian assets for the reconstruction of Palestine. This was stated on February 18 by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in an interview with Al-Arabiya TV channel.
"The President [of the United States Donald] Trump, when he found out about this (about the proposal to use Russian assets for Palestine. — Ed.), reacted positively, said it was a good idea. But since then, the Americans have not confirmed their president's assessment in any way," Lavrov said.
According to him, the Russian side had previously sent official consent to Washington for the use of Russian assets for projects in the Gaza Strip with a request to notify what exactly the funds would be allocated for. He also recalled that for the first time such a proposal was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin in connection with the visit of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
"Washington said that they are holding a meeting of this "Peace Council" on February 19, and that the countries have already promised to give $5 billion. I hope that one of these billions is Russian," the minister said.
On January 21, Putin announced the possibility of transferring $1 billion from Russian assets frozen in the United States to the Peace Council, taking into account Russia's special relations with the Palestinian people. He stressed that this issue is planned to be discussed with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Later, on January 22, Trump called Putin's proposal to send $1 billion from frozen assets to Palestine interesting. At the same time, the American leader did not specify whether he objected to the idea of Russia.
