In 2026, several areas in the Sakhalin Region will be closed for salmon fishing. This was announced at a meeting of the fisheries council of the region.

According to SakhalinMedia news agency, the southwestern coast and part of the northeastern coast of Sakhalin, as well as the Gulf of Patience and Kunashir Island will be banned. The decision was also made in connection with the recommendation to ban Pacific salmon fishing in 2026, which came from the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography.

In the south-east of Sakhalin, in Aniva Bay and Iturup Island, fishing will be allowed only when optimal filling of spawning grounds is achieved. Pink salmon fishing is scheduled to begin on July 15, and chum salmon on August 16.

There will be no restrictions for amateur fishermen in 2026.
