- The State Duma called the words of Khrushchev's great-granddaughter about the status of Crimea a betrayal
The words of Nina, the great-granddaughter of Nikita Khrushchev, the former first secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, about the alleged belonging of Crimea to Ukraine are a betrayal. This was stated on February 18 by Mikhail Sheremet, a State Duma deputy from the Crimean region and a member of the security committee.
The day before, Nina Khrushcheva, in an interview with journalist Katerina Gordeeva (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation), which was published on her YouTube channel, stated that Crimea is part of Ukraine. Its transfer to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954, according to Khrushcheva, was a "managerial decision" to tie Ukraine to Russia.
"Khrushchev's great—granddaughter is far from Russia, its people and history. <...> These statements are made in the spirit of traitors to Russia," Sheremet said in a conversation with RIA Novosti.
In his opinion, with such words Khrushchev ignores the opinion of the inhabitants of Crimea, who in 2014 chose to join the Russian Federation. He added that Ukraine and Russia were once a single state, but Kiev betrayed this history by choosing the path of Nazism.
Oleg Bondarenko, head of the Crimean Support Center for Ukrainian Displaced Persons at the international public movement "The Other Ukraine", said on December 11 that it was time for Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to leave Crimea alone. He noted that the peninsula is not just a territory, but people who made their historical choice in 2014 and linked their future with Russia.
Prior to that, on December 9, Zelensky admitted that Kiev does not have the strength to return Crimea to the country. It was noted that Ukraine still considers Crimea as its territory, and Western states adhere to the same position.
