UEFA will investigate the incident involving Vinicius in the match with Benfica

UEFA is initiating disciplinary proceedings into a possible racist insult against Real Madrid football Club (FC) forward Vinicius Junior in the Champions League match against Benfica. This was reported on February 18 by Madrid Universal, citing sources.

"UEFA will open a disciplinary case into an alleged act of racism against Vinicius Junior. <...> It will be extremely difficult to determine the exact content of the insult, and if it cannot be proven, there will be no sanctions," a message on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

The incident happened on February 17 after Vinicius scored a goal in the 50th minute of the match and celebrated in front of the Portuguese team's fans. After that, the Brazilian striker appealed to the referee of the match, Francois Letexier, with a complaint about a racist remark by Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni.

Letexier stopped the game for 10 minutes, after which he appealed to the coaches of the teams about the inadmissibility of such actions. When the French referee was ready to continue the match, Vinicius refused to enter the field and sat on the bench.

Subsequently, the match nevertheless continued, the goal of the Real Madrid striker was victorious, and the meeting ended with a score of 0:1 in favor of the Madrid team.

On the same day, FC Paris Saint-Germain defeated Monaco 3-2 in the first play-off match to reach the 1/8 finals of the Champions League. Striker Desiree Douai scored twice for the winners (29th and 67th minutes), defender Ashraf Hakimi scored another goal (41st). Folarin Balogan scored for Monaco (first and 18th minutes). Monaco's Russian midfielder Alexander Golovin joined the starting line-up and scored an assist.
