Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth personally ordered the resignation of one of the department's most experienced public relations specialists, Dave Butler. This was reported on February 17 by The New York Times (NYT).

"Two representatives of the Ministry of Defense stated that Hegseth accused Colonel Butler of publishing at the end of last year, in which he was unfavorably compared with Secretary of the Army Daniel Driscoll," the publication says.

Colonel Butler until recently served as Chief Strategic Communications Adviser to Army Chief of Staff General Randy George. It is noted that Butler was the official representative of General Mark Milley during the period when he headed the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Experts note that the direct intervention of the Minister of Defense in personnel matters of an army representative is an unprecedented case and underscores the deep split within the department. The reason for Hegseth's abrupt decision is his open hostility to General Milli.

The NYT notes that such personnel changes in the leadership of the military department may indicate the beginning of a large-scale campaign to root out supporters of Millie's "old guard" in the Pentagon structures.

In November 2025, the Pentagon called on the House of Representatives to investigate whether Congressman Yevgeny Vindman conducted "improper consultations" on behalf of Ukraine. It was alleged that Vindman and his twin brother, Alexander, did not have the approval of the US government to work as "paid intermediaries" for American defense companies entering into contracts with Ukraine.
