The number of car loans issued in January reached a three-year low.
In January 2026, 59.74 thousand car loans were issued in Russia, which is 43% less than in the previous month. On an annual basis, issuance decreased by 19%. This result was also the lowest in the last three years. This was reported on February 17 by TASS with reference to the press service of the United Credit Bureau (OKB).
The volume of car loans in January also decreased by 43% compared to December and amounted to 90.05 billion rubles. However, the indicator grew by 1% year-on-year.
Most often, Russians took out loans to buy new cars — 64% of the total and 69% of the total (compared to December and January last year, the figures did not change much). Last January, the average term of a car loan reached 71 months, and the figure increased by 7 months over the year.
The average car loan receipt has not dropped below 1.5 million rubles since September 2025. The average loan amount for a new car was 1.7 million rubles, and for a used car — 1.36 million rubles. Analysts have estimated that the average annual car loan amount has increased by almost 300 thousand rubles.
The leading regions in terms of car loans in January were Moscow (4.19 thousand car loans worth 8.53 billion rubles), the Moscow region (3.98 thousand loans worth 7.33 billion rubles) and St. Petersburg (2.97 thousand loans worth 5.15 billion rubles). The largest car loans at the beginning of the year were issued to residents of Ingushetia (2.33 million rubles)., Moscow and the Magadan region (2.03 million rubles each).
On February 4, it was reported that by the end of January 2026, 80.6 thousand new passenger cars were sold in Russia, which is 9.5% less than in the same month of 2025.
