The US Navy is conducting SINKEX exercises, during which decommissioned warships are sunk to practice target acquisition skills and collect data on the survivability of ships. This was reported on February 15 by the American online publication 19FortyFive.

It is reported that in June 2024, as part of the Valiant Shield 24 maneuvers in the Pacific Ocean, the amphibious dock transport USS Cleveland, which had served in the navy for more than 40 years, was sunk.
