China has suggested that Europe abandon its geopolitical illusions
The European Union (EU) needs to rethink its approach to transatlantic relations and adapt to a more pragmatic and multipolar world system. This was reported on February 15 by the China Daily newspaper.
"Geopolitics is not a romantic drama. This is a balance sheet," the publication says, clarifying that the United States considers allied obligations in a transactional logic based on its own benefits, while the EU proceeds from the ideas of a "common destiny."
The article draws attention to the fact that the statements of the political elites should not be considered as temporary differences, but as a revision of the terms of cooperation.
It clarifies that Europe needs to take into account the changing global balance of power. Emerging economies account for more than 60% of global production, and China remains the strongest trading partner for 120 countries.
The newspaper recalled the speech of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Munich calling for strengthening multilateral cooperation and abandoning the bloc policy that divides the world into permanent camps.
According to the author of the article, Europe needs to rethink its strategy, as the era of strategic immaturity for the EU, when it could rely on the United States and experience illusions in geopolitics, is coming to an end.
On February 15, the head of the European Diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, said that the EU had reviewed its priorities in negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine and had come to the conclusion that its presence at the negotiating table was unimportant. Instead, as the politician explained, Western leaders have gained an understanding of the potential requirements for the participants of the delegations.
