The prosecutor's office of the Zheleznodorozhny district of Khabarovsk has sent a criminal case to the court against a 24-year-old local resident accused of negligently damaging someone else's property as a result of a fire. This was announced by the regional prosecutor's office on February 16.
It is specified that the accused on the night of August 2 to 3, 2025, while in his apartment, went out on the balcony to smoke. Smoldering cigarette butts and ashes left in the ashtray led to a fire.
"Five apartments and the roof of the house were damaged by the fire. The amount of damage caused amounted to 17 million rubles," the agency said in a statement on its Telegram channel.
168 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Damage to someone else's property on a large scale, committed through careless handling"). The accused fully admitted his guilt.
The press service of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported on January 22 that a fire broke out in an apartment on the second floor of a high-rise building in Angarsk, as a result of which a 78-year-old woman died. It was clarified that the cause of the fire was carelessness when smoking.
