Since the beginning of the year, two people have died in Russia from falling snow and ice from the roofs of buildings, and 13 more have been injured. This was announced on February 14 by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
"As a result of falling snow and ice from the roofs of buildings, 15 people were injured, including 13 children, two of them died, including one child," TASS quoted the message as saying.
According to the agency, the incidents were recorded at residential facilities, social and cultural infrastructure. People were injured in Moscow, the Moscow, Tula and Nizhny Novgorod regions.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations called on the regional authorities to organize immediate cleaning of the roofs of buildings in order to avoid new incidents.
Earlier that day, in the Tambov region, a man died as a result of the collapse of a hospital canopy due to a large accumulation of snow. A criminal case has been opened into the incident under Article 293 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Negligence").
Before that, five children were injured as a result of falling snow from the roof of a house in the Nizhny Novgorod region of Nizhny Novgorod. A criminal case was opened into the incident under Part 1 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements").
