A meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific and Expert Council of the Russian Maritime Collegium was held in Moscow, which was devoted to the application of nuclear technologies in shipbuilding. The participants talked about the development of the naval, merchant and research fleets, and also noted the importance of preserving the traditions of the Soviet atomic school. Expert Council meeting

On February 13, the Kurchatov Institute House of Scientists hosted a joint meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific Expert Council of the Russian Maritime Collegium, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Presidium of the Scientific Council of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center and the Council of the priority technological area. The participants discussed the use of nuclear technologies in shipbuilding for the navy, as well as merchant and research fleets. Special attention was paid to continuing the traditions of the Soviet atomic school, including that of the outstanding physicist Academician Alexandrov, whose 123rd birthday anniversary the event was timed to coincide with.

Opening the meeting and welcoming the participants, Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Scientific Center, Deputy Chairman of the Maritime Board, noted Academician Alexandrov's contribution to the development of the first Soviet reactors and the creation of the domestic atomic bomb, which he was engaged in as a close associate of Igor Kurchatov.

— Thanks to Anatoly Alexandrov's work, today we live in one of the few sovereign countries in the world and have powerful nuclear technologies and a nuclear fleet. They preserve our independence and make us a high—tech power," Mikhail Kovalchuk said.

Anatoly Alexandrov and Igor Kurchatov were born in the same year — 1903 - and worked together for most of their lives. At the same time, they have never been rivals and have always supported each other, which has largely ensured the country's success in the nuclear field, said the head of the Kurchatov Institute.

The legacy of Academician Alexandrov

Addressing the audience, Nikolai Patrushev, Assistant to the President and Chairman of the Russian Maritime Board, emphasized the role of the scientist in the development of the naval and nuclear fleets. Anatoly Alexandrov started working on this topic back in the 1930s, when he and Igor Kurchatov developed a method to protect ships from magnetic mines. It was successfully used during the Great Patriotic War. This made it possible to preserve the core of the Black Sea, Baltic and Northern Fleets.

— Anatoly Alexandrov became the father of the nuclear submarine fleet and the initiator of the use of nuclear energy at sea. Under his scientific leadership, three generations of nuclear submarines were created, dozens of different types of boats were designed and built. During their development, advanced solutions were introduced, including the use of titanium hulls for torpedo and missile nuclear submarines," said Nikolai Patrushev.

Gennady Krasnikov, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, noted the importance of preserving the memory of outstanding Soviet scientists, one of whom was Anatoly Alexandrov. Many of the challenges they faced remain relevant today, so we need to use their experience.

— Anatoly Alexandrov was a unique man, three times a Hero of Socialist Labor. He managed to unite talented people around him, lead them and implement the most ambitious projects for the country," he said.

The scientist headed the Institute of Physical Problems and the Academy of Sciences for many years, led the Kurchatov Institute, laid the foundation for the development of the nuclear fleet, energy, space exploration and other strategic industries, the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences recalled.
