- Ryabkov announced the impossibility of unilateral concessions on the START Treaty from the Russian Federation
The Russian side will not make unilateral concessions in the case of new agreements on the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START Treaty). This was announced on January 13 by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
"If colleagues expect to come to an agreement with us on something else on a different basis, then they are deeply mistaken. Especially now: there is simply no question of any unilateral concessions on our part," he said in an interview with TASS.
He also noted that Moscow is still unclear about the attitude of the administration of US President Donald Trump regarding future negotiations in this area. According to Ryabkov, the Russian Federation knows only about the public statements of the American side.
On February 11, Vice President of the United States Jay D. Vance said that the United States continues negotiations with Russia on concluding an updated version of the START Treaty. Vance called the proliferation of nuclear weapons "the worst thing that could happen" to the American people.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 6 that informal extensions of the START Treaty between Russia and the United States were unlikely. According to him, not only Russia, but also the other side is aware of the need to start negotiations on the START Treaty as soon as possible, given its importance for international security.
