During the surrender, the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) received an order from the command to open fire on Russian soldiers, but refused to comply with it. This was announced on February 13 by Yevhen Berestenko, assistant grenade launcher officer of the 31st separate signal Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"[The commanders] shouted into our radio to open fire to kill. But we weren't going to open it, because everyone wants to return home, and their lives are more expensive," he said in an interview with TASS.
