On February 10, the Federal Antimonopoly Service of Russia announced that it was beginning to check utility tariffs in a number of regions of the country. The purpose of the inspections is to assess the economic feasibility of the cost of electricity, heat, gas, water supply and sanitation services. The FAS also recalled that from January 1, 2026, the base rate of value-added tax (VAT) increased by 2%, which should have led to a corresponding tariff adjustment.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 12 that the sharp increase in tariffs for housing and communal services in Russia should be slowed down, this should not happen.
