Sobyanin spoke about the construction of subway tunnels under water

In the Moscow metro, tunnels run under different bodies of water in more than 50 places. Their construction is a complex engineering task that requires special care and additional security measures, said the mayor of the capital, Sergei Sobyanin, in his blog channel in the IACH.

About 20 underwater tunnels are laid under the Moskva River, eight under the Yauza, the rest pass under the Nagatinsky Backwater, the Skhodnensky Canal, the Bolshoy Presnensky Pond, the small rivers Setun, Setunka, Ochakovka, Varvarka, Ordynka, Sosenka, Gorodnya, Chertanovka, Likhoborka and others. "And the number of such structures will only grow," the mayor of Moscow emphasized in a blog post.

Last year alone, tunnel shields passed 680 m under water, Sobyanin said. In mid—January, the laying of a large double—track tunnel with a diameter of 10 m began between the Serebryany Bor and Strogino stations of the new Rublyovo-Arkhangelsk branch. It will become the longest underwater tunnel of the Moscow Metro: the Lilia tunnel complex will have to pass 3.34 km, of which almost 2 km will be under the Moskva River and Bolshoy Stroginsky Backwater.

The underwater tunnels are being drilled in a water-resistant clay layer, the mayor said. Groundwater drainage is carried out using special systems that prevent the accumulation of moisture. Special tubes with metal insulation are used for the installation of the tunnel. Since it is impossible to install ventilation shafts underwater, powerful fans will be installed in a special channel above the tracks on the Serebryany Bor —Strogino section instead.

This year, the Moscow authorities plan to open the first section of the Rublyovo-Arkhangelsk branch line — from the Business Center to General Karbyshev Boulevard. Earlier, the shields completed the tunneling from the Shelepikha station to the General Karbyshev Boulevard station.
