Russians were told about a new scheme of fraudsters calling landlines

Attackers are increasingly turning to the old method of calling landlines, which are not protected at the network level and often do not have caller ids. This was announced on February 12 by the head of Beeline's anti-fraud department, Alexander Fadeev.

It is specified that an increase in the number of such calls was recorded in the summer of 2025, when fraudsters began to actively use landline phones, which, unlike mobile phones, are easier to crack. The advantage of landlines is that their users are often elderly citizens and children, and the phone itself is usually perceived as a communication channel only with loved ones or representatives of organizations, which reduces the alertness of potential victims.

According to Fadeev, the scammers present themselves as employees of various organizations and offer to immediately extend the contract with the telecommunications company, pay gas or electricity bills, replace utility meters or apply for a free replacement of equipment. One of the most popular fraudulent scenarios is to prepare for the modernization of the telephone line or to reissue documents for the pension fund.

"They may be trying to get personal information or solicit an SMS code to hack government Services or a banking application," the expert told RIA Novosti

The Social Fund of Russia warned about the intensification of such threats.

On February 11, the Department for combating the illegal use of information and communication technologies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reported that fraudsters began using advanced methods to disguise phishing domain names, replacing characters with mirror letters, changing lowercase letters to uppercase letters and adding various combinations of underscores.
