Significant progress has been made by the parties in providing security guarantees to Ukraine over the past six months. This was announced on Tuesday, February 11, by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

"Significant progress over the past six months has been related specifically to security guarantees," he said during his speech at a meeting of NATO defense ministers.

Rutte named three elements that were discussed in the framework of the question he voiced. Thus, according to the draft potential guarantees, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) will perform a defensive function after reaching a peace agreement, and the so-called "coalition of the willing" and the United States will participate in compliance with the agreements.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on the same day that Kiev and its supporters were talking about security guarantees without Russia's participation. The minister stressed that the participants in the discussions do not take into account Moscow's position, which provides for the "automatic outbreak of war against the Russian Federation."

On February 10, Lavrov said that the Russian side would demand a specific answer from the West, to whom and for what "security guarantees" were given in Ukraine.
