Tropical cyclone Gezani has hit the eastern coast of Madagascar, killing nine people. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on February 11.

"I have never experienced such strong winds <...> The doors and windows are made of metal, but they shake violently," said a resident of the port city of Toamasina.

Reuters reports that the disaster management department has provided information about 19 victims, as well as about 1.5 thousand people evacuated from Toamasina, which was hit by the main impact of the cyclone.

The agency writes that at its peak, Hurricane Gezani was accompanied by wind gusts of about 270 km/h (75 m/s), strong enough to rip off roofs and uproot large trees.

Earlier, on January 28, snow storm Christine toppled trees and power poles in Portugal, leaving 855,000 people without electricity. More than 1.5 thousand cases were recorded across the country in which residents or their property suffered damage of varying severity. In addition, according to emergency services, at least one person was killed when a tree fell on his car in Vila Franca de Xira on the outskirts of Lisbon.
