Lavrov called the talks about the denuclearization of the DPRK disrespectful
In the current conditions of increasing military cooperation between the United States and South Korea with Japan, it is impossible to talk about the denuclearization of the DPRK, as this would be disrespectful to Pyongyang. This was announced on February 11 by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, speaking at the government hour in the State Duma.
"We objectively recognize this reality, and we believe that in the current conditions <...>, when the West is waging an active campaign against our <...>...> neighbors (from the DPRK. — Ed.), this is a reality that cannot be undone," he said.
According to him, the increasing military cooperation between the United States, South Korea and Japan, including aspects of nuclear weapons, makes any calls for denuclearization incorrect and ignores the interests of the DPRK.
The minister also noted that the Russian side will no longer support resolutions with sanctions against the DPRK in the UN Security Council. In the future, Russia will not allow such documents, he added.
"But to expect that we will introduce a resolution on lifting sanctions and it will pass — well, it's just not serious," Lavrov stressed.
The Wall Street Journal reported on February 6 that the United States would stop blocking the allocation of humanitarian aid to the DPRK through the UN, but did not consider this a gesture of goodwill. It was noted that the United States intends to lift the blockages from all exceptions to UN sanctions against Pyongyang, which should make it possible to supply international aid to the country.
At the same time, Yonhap news agency reported that South Korea or the United States could soon take a step that would be regarded as a "goodwill gesture" towards the DPRK. It was noted that such statements were made due to assumptions about possible plans of the American leader Donald Trump to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his visit to China in April.
Last October, the US President visited the Republic of Korea, where he took part in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. During a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, Trump promised to end the conflict between North Korea and South Korea.
