The Union of Zoos reported a shortage of capybaras in Russia
There is a shortage of capybaras in Russian zoos, as many institutions have begun to actively acquire these animals due to their increased popularity. This was announced on February 11 by Sergey Pisarev, member of the Presidium of the Union of Zoos and Aquariums of Russia, director of the Barnaul Zoo.
"The capybara is not a rare animal, but no one paid attention to it before the trend emerged. When the trend appeared, all zoos began to acquire them in their collections, so there was a shortage," Pisarev said.
According to him, there are very few zoos in Russia where capybaras can breed. It is impossible to dramatically increase the number of newborn capybaras, since special conditions are required for their breeding. Capybaras can only mate in water, and each pair needs a separate pool with a temperature of 26 degrees, which requires additional investment and time.
Pisarev also said that a capybara lived in the Barnaul Zoo for a long time, but two years ago it died of old age.
On February 9, Svetlana Akulova, director of the Moscow Zoo, announced the refusal of a Muscovite from a baby cougar, which he was trying to keep in an apartment. It was noted that the animal was handed over to specialists. According to Akulova, the cougar feels good.
