The United States will send 200 troops to Nigeria to train the country's military in the fight against Islamist militants. This was reported on February 11 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

"Terrorist activity in West Africa — and in particular in Nigeria — causes us great concern. We want to work with competent and willing partners who are able to address these common security issues," said a representative of the U.S. Africa Command.

The statement was made a few weeks later, after US President Donald Trump accused the West African government of failing to protect Christians from terrorist attacks.

The newspaper also adds that the Americans will train the local military, but will not participate in the fighting. The publication also adds that American military personnel will be deployed throughout the country for training and maintenance of Nigerian troops. They will also help with the coordination of infantry and air operations.

Earlier, on December 26, 2025, the US army launched strikes against the militants of the Islamic State group (IS, ISIL, the organization is recognized as a terrorist organization and banned in the Russian Federation) in northwestern Nigeria. Trump noted that the US military had carried out several precision attacks.
