A strong earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred in the Anapa region. What is known
On the night of February 10, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred in Anapa and Novorossiysk. Tremors were felt in a number of settlements in the Krasnodar Territory. According to preliminary data, there are no casualties or serious damage. The authorities are assessing the consequences. Read more about the incident in the Izvestia article.
Where is the epicenter of the earthquake
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), the earthquake was located at a depth of more than 20 km. The main fluctuations of the earth's surface were recorded at 02:21 Moscow time.
It is specified that the epicenter of the seismic event was located 35 km northwest of Novorossiysk and 13 km northeast of Anapa. In addition to Novorossiysk and Anapa, the villages of Vityazevo, Sukko, Stanitsa Rayevskaya and other nearby settlements were in the zone of noticeable tremors.
Earthquake in Krasnodar Region — what eyewitnesses say
Many residents were awakened by strong tremors, which, according to them, lasted several minutes. The first reports about the consequences appeared on social networks.
Eyewitnesses from Anapa and surrounding areas reported damage to residential buildings. Cracks were found in ceilings and walls in some buildings, and plaster was falling off. In the entrances of apartment buildings, tiles were falling off the walls in places.
A resident of the village of Verkhnebakansky in the suburbs of Novorossiysk said that the underground rumble felt like an explosion. At first, she thought a drone had crashed nearby. She then learned about the earthquake from the news.
Official information from the authorities
Representatives of local administrations promptly responded to the incident. Novorossiysk Mayor Andrey Kravchenko said in his Telegram channel that, according to preliminary information, there had been no damage to the city's infrastructure. He also reminded the townspeople about the rules of conduct in case of earthquakes posted on the administration's website.
At the moment, information about the victims or victims of the disaster has not been received. Specialists are conducting an inspection of the housing stock and socially significant facilities to assess possible damage. Residents of the region are urged to remain calm and follow official instructions.
Expert opinion on the causes of the earthquake in the Krasnodar Territory
Geologists attribute the incident to tectonic activity in the region. According to Professor Boris Vakhrushev, Head of the Department of Geography and Geomorphology at Vernadsky Crimean Federal University, the earthquake could have been caused by the discharge of accumulated stresses in the Earth's crust.
"The zone between the Pacific Ocean, the Eastern European platform and the block of the African-Arabian continent has become more active. There is an accumulation of tension, there is a discharge," the RIA Novosti expert explained.
He noted that the Black Sea coast is characterized by the so-called Pontic effect associated with the pressure of tectonic blocks.
The scientist also added that the current event is probably related to the earthquake in the Sea of Azov, recorded on February 2 off the coast of Crimea. Both phenomena are part of the general seismic discharge in the Black Sea region, where the most powerful impacts usually occur in Turkey, Greece and Italy.
In general, the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, including the Krasnodar Territory, is considered an area with moderate seismic activity. Experts note that earthquakes occur less frequently here and, as a rule, have a lower magnitude compared to neighboring seismically active zones.
