The issue of translating proverbs and sayings is always the subject of heated discussions, and there is no universal solution for it. This was announced on February 10 by the head of the Department of Linguistic Support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Gritsai.

"The topic of translating proverbs, sayings, and idioms is the subject of eternal debate. There is no single recipe here and there cannot be," TASS quoted him as saying.

The diplomat noted that translators try to adhere to the principle of the "golden mean" in this matter, maintaining a balance between the transfer of imagery using analogs and literal translation. Gritsai added that in this case the phrase will be easier for the listener to perceive.

"But, firstly, there is not a direct equivalent for every idiom, and secondly, these expressions are usually very figurative, and it will be difficult for the translator to get out of the situation if the speaker continues to mention the image used in phraseology in his speech," he concluded.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the constructive role of Russian diplomacy is in demand in the face of increasing turbulence in the world. He also noted that in order to reliably ensure the national security of the Russian Federation, it is necessary to use all the capabilities and tools of Russian diplomacy.
