The State Duma commented on the organization of the Olympic Games in Milan
On February 9, Dmitry Svishchev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of preparations for the Olympic Games in Italy.
Earlier, the winner of the figure skating team tournament, American Alice Liu, announced on social media that her gold medal had come off the ribbon due to problems with fastening. Svishchev stressed that such incidents cause disappointment among athletes, since a medal is not just an award, but a lifelong memory.
"The Organizing Committee of the Olympiad saved money or showed sloppiness. It's a pity that athletes don't post medals, but the way they fall apart and crumble. For any medalist, this is a lifelong memory. The reward he had fought for all his life. And when it falls apart in your hands, the memories get blurred," he said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Svishchev also recalled the 2014 Sochi Olympics, noting that the medals were carefully checked and approved back then. In his opinion, the situation in Milan contrasts with the way the competition was organized in Russia.
"In Sochi, they measured everything, looked at how it looked, how it held, how it was packed. It was a whole procedure. Now I don't understand why the Olympics symbols are of such poor quality," he added.
He also noted that this was not the first time problems had occurred at the Milan Olympics and expressed doubt that this would be the last such story.
On February 9, Andrea Franchisi, Chief Operating Officer of the organizing Committee of the Olympic Games in Italy, promised to find out the causes of medal failures, which several competition winners complained about. According to him, the organizers are aware of the problem and are already working to fix it.
