Maria Provatorova, chief freelance pediatric epileptologist of the Moscow region, neurologist, PhD, spoke about the causes of epilepsy.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Monday, February 9, the expert explained that epilepsy is a group of various diseases in which the brain is able to regularly generate seizures. The attack is based on excessive increased electrical discharges in the brain, while the classic manifestations in the form of seizures, loss of consciousness and foaming at the mouth are just one of the possible options. In practice, seizures can be much more diverse and depend on which part of the brain is involved in the pathological process.

According to the specialist, seizures can occur, for example, on half of the face, accompanied by short-term fading, blinking and other less noticeable symptoms. She noted that the disease is characterized by a genetic predisposition, which is not necessarily related to heredity: an individual mutation can also be the cause. In addition, epilepsy can develop as a result of brain damage caused by traumatic brain injuries, strokes, or severe infections.

The neurologist also stressed that, despite its short duration, an epileptic seizure is a life-threatening condition, since there is a risk of brain edema and the danger of improper care. 360.ru .

Earlier on February 9, neurologist Ekaterina Demyanovskaya, in an interview with RIAMO, told how to help a person with an epilepsy attack. According to her, the main mistake of others is an attempt to physically restrain a person or actively interfere. The task of others is to gently support the body as much as possible and gently lay it on the floor, removing all hard, sharp and massive objects around. She noted that seizures occur due to excessive electrical discharges in the brain. Such discharges resemble an "electrical storm" that disrupts the normal transmission of signals between neurons, clarifies Life.ru .

Last August, Demyanovskaya told Izvestia that olfactory hallucinations are one of the symptoms of epilepsy. According to her, hallucinations occur, as a rule, suddenly, last from a few seconds to two to three minutes and are most often described by patients as unpleasant - the smell of burning, rotten eggs, gasoline or chemicals.

Earlier Pravda.Ru She wrote that epileptic seizures can be generalized and partial (focal). Generalized seizures occur when the entire brain or most of it is involved and most often manifest as a tonic-clonic seizure with loss of consciousness and seizures, whereas partial seizures are associated with damage to one area of the brain and are accompanied by local symptoms; sometimes such an attack can turn into generalized.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
