Oncologist named the main risk factor for developing stomach cancer
Infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori remains the main risk factor for developing stomach cancer. The infection causes a precancerous condition called atrophic gastritis. Basir Bammatov, an oncologist at the Krasnogorsk Hospital of the Ministry of Health of the Moscow Region, told the newspaper on February 9. NEWS.ru .
The development of stomach cancer in most cases is associated with long-term inflammatory changes in the mucous membrane of the organ. The most studied risk factor remains Helicobacter pylori infection, which can lead to the formation of atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and other precancerous changes, noted Bammatov.
Along with infectious causes, lifestyle factors also affect the risk of developing the disease. The doctor pointed out that excessive consumption of salty, smoked and processed foods, a shortage of fresh vegetables and fruits, smoking and alcohol consumption increase the likelihood of oncological changes in the gastric mucosa.
At the same time, hereditary forms of stomach cancer are less common, but the presence of the disease in close relatives is considered as an increased risk factor and requires more careful medical supervision.
Prevention of the disease, according to the specialist, includes timely diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection, dietary and lifestyle adjustments, as well as regular endoscopic monitoring in patients from high-risk groups in accordance with clinical recommendations.
Oncologist, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences Ali Mudunov said on February 3 that the average age of cancer in Russia is 65 years. Doctors do not record significant changes in the age structure of patients.
