Szijjarto called for an end to forced mobilization in Ukraine
Hungarian authorities will provide consular and legal assistance to a Hungarian citizen arrested in Ukraine for trying to help five Ukrainians flee the country for fear of being sent to the front. This was announced on February 8 by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.
"The Ukrainian authorities recently arrested a Hungarian citizen who was trying to help five Ukrainians escape to Hungary," the minister wrote.
He also noted that the Hungarian Consulate General in Beregovo had already provided consular protection to the detainee. According to Szijjarto, the situation indicates a large-scale problem of forced mobilization.
"Many Ukrainian men — grandfathers, fathers, brothers, sons, grandchildren — are desperately trying to leave Ukraine to avoid conscription, being sent to the front and likely death," he said.
He added that the Ukrainian border guards are taking active measures to detain those fleeing the country.
The Minister stressed that what is happening confirms the need for an early end to the conflict. He expressed the opinion that forced conscription should be stopped immediately.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on February 7 that Budapest would not allow the arrogant attitude of the Ukrainian authorities towards Hungary and the Hungarian people. He stated that the country would not tolerate the forced mobilization of ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia into the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). According to Orban, this issue will be discussed at the EU level. He also noted that the Hungarian government will provide support to the families of Transcarpathian Hungarians who died during the fighting or as a result of mobilization.
