The WSJ reported on the Pentagon's plans to deploy nuclear submarines in Australia.
The Pentagon plans to deploy American nuclear submarines at the HMAS Stirling naval base in Western Australia in the coming years. This was reported on February 7 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
"This geographical location allows us to strengthen the capabilities of the fleet and restore combat readiness faster," said Rear Admiral of the United States Navy Lincoln Rifsteck during a visit to the base.
According to analysts, the project is considered by Washington as a backup option in case of a possible conflict between the United States and China. It is planned to deploy up to four submarines in rotation, the first of which is due to arrive in 2027.
Australia is investing approximately $5.6 billion in the modernization of the base and the construction of a repair complex that will service American submarines closer to the region of operations and reduce the burden on US Navy facilities in Guam and Hawaii, the WSJ notes.
ABC TV channel reported on February 4 that the Australian authorities plan to put up for sale several military facilities to compensate for the shortage of defense capabilities. The list of assets for sale includes Victoria Barracks in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, Spectrum Island and HMAS Penguin Fleet Air Base in New South Wales. According to the report, many of these facilities are in poor condition, and their repair is considered economically impractical.
